Thanks, we were fairly productive! It took a few hours of walking around in a hot kitchen, but it should pay off throughout the week - we'll see. We'll also see whether we can stay at the dollar amount we set for groceries without running into problems.

We would like to buy a lot of meat someday, but right now we can't get a freezer to store it. For the time being, the biggest amount of meat we ever buy is brisket. I look forward to reading what you do with all that beef you're buying!

That sounds like an amazingly productive day! I used to do the same thing when I was working, I'd spend Sunday afternoon making breakfasts, lunches, desserts and at least one dinner for the week. These days, I'm nowhere near as methodical.

I'm impressed that you're cutting $85 from your grocery budget! I'm in the midst of purchasing all my beef for the year, so August is going to be very expensive in the food department.

Yes, we desperately need more midwives for both homebirth and hospital births. And we need obstetricians too for the high-risk moms and surgical births. Problem is the system is so imbalanced in this country that most women are subjected to a cascade of interventions in labor -- beginning with medically unnecessary induction and augmentation of labor -- that actually cause complications.

We need to recognize what other developed countries have been doing right for centuries and follow suit. We are in no position here in the US, with our miserable birth statistics, to defend the status quo in maternity care. And based on the snowballing consumer-led movement toward Birth Change, women are demanding better, safer, more autonomous care.

Erin, thanks for your comments! I agree. I think it is important for the one who is "conducting" the birth - the mother - the be as able to do her job as possible. The support, information and preparation and midwife provides seem to go a long way toward that goal. Doctors, on the other hand, seem to be most helpful when something is really wrong.

Thanks for sharing this. As a health care provider and woman I am an advocate for women being truly informed about what they are signing up for -- wherever they choose to birth, home or hospital. Birth works best when there is minimal intervention imposed upon it, and that is most likely to happen with midwives. Ideally our best maternity care system would utilize midwives to their fullest capacity as the primary providers for low-risk women both at home an in the hospital, with OB/GYNs functioning as the surgical specialists they are trained to be, managing the high-risk mothers. This is the system utilized in almost all other developed nations, all of which have maternal and newborn statistics that are superior to ours here in the US. Women fare better (die less) in pregnancy and birth in 40 other countries. Most importantly we need to honor and protect women's choices and safety in birth, and midwifery is a vital part of that equation.
